A first-principles search for what actually works — a personal beginning, and a five-thousand-year-old idea about what fresh water already knows how to do.

The Beginning

The origin of Abzu Refinery is a personal one. Six doctors prescribed pharmaceutical solutions. One prescribed cannabis. That is where Abzu began — with a first-hand lesson in what clean medicine actually means: no biomass contamination, no solvents, nothing between the plant and the patient that should not be there.

Chasing that standard, I started making cold-water hash the way the craft world does — with ice and filtration bags. It worked, but not well enough. The process was inconsistent, labour-heavy, and inefficient — nowhere near the repeatable, documented standard a corporate or medical operation would accept.

As I thought back on my corporate experience — years in boardrooms and with the C-suite, watching how our analysts weighed Lean and Six Sigma and made real decisions on it — the distinction sharpened. Pushing an existing method for a little more yield is not the same as building a new one. Going from plain ice water to ice-water bags was the first kind: making an existing way incrementally better. The Abzu Refinery is the second — not a better wash, but a new method entirely, engineered from first principles to maximise every moment and every experience the biomass is having. A new paradigm of trichome detachment and collection.

And the reframe was the whole thing. Clean, documented, medical-grade output is not a cost to be minimised — it is the growth lever, the opportunity hiding where everyone else sees a problem. Build the process that makes it repeatable, and the margin, the medical channel, and the export lane open together. Ice, mechanical agitation, and brute force could never get there — methods that destroy what they are meant to deliver, and nobody had stopped to ask why.

The Inventor

Coming from a background in enterprise advisory and corporate operations, and an understanding of the discipline behind Lean and Six Sigma — doing more with less, eliminating waste, and building systems that work the same way every time — the problems with conventional ice-water processing were immediately legible. The process was labour-intensive, inconsistent, and operator-dependent. There was no leverage. Every run was a negotiation, not a system. That is not a production method; it is controlled improvisation — and it was the only way anyone was doing it.

That recognition started the design process — not to refine the existing method, but to understand what was actually happening in the water, and engineer the conditions that would allow the correct outcome to occur without force, without guesswork, and without the operator being the variable that determined quality. The question was never “how do we do this better?” It was “what is the correct way to do this at all?”

Abzu Refinery answers that question — built from physical first principles, not a continuation of any earlier project. Built in Western Canada. Built from the physics up.

The Name

The ancient world understood water as intelligent — not metaphorically, but practically.

Abzu (Sumerian) and āpas (Sanskrit/Vedic) are a cognate pair naming the same cosmological concept across five thousand years: the primordial freshwater intelligence, the discriminating medium that separates the pure from the impure. Not metaphor. Observation — rendered as mythology because that was the available language.

The Vedic tradition documented soma preparation using cold water, mesh filtration, and staged refinement — the oldest recorded trichome-processing protocol in human history. That protocol understood what the modern processing industry forgot: the medium is intelligent, and the task of the engineer is not to force an outcome but to calibrate the conditions that allow the outcome to occur.

The logo carries आपस् in Devanagari above ABZU in Latin — both names, one concept. Five thousand years of the same understanding, now engineered at commercial scale.

The domain of Enki — the principle of water, wisdom, and appropriate craft. The machine is named for what water already knows.
