Two names, from two of the oldest written traditions on earth, point at the same thing. In Sumer it was Abzu — ab, water, and zu, deep: the primordial freshwater abyss beneath the world (our own word “abyss” descends from it), the domain of Enki, the god of water, wisdom, and skilled craft. In the Vedic tradition it was āpas — the waters, named not as a substance but as a discriminating power, the medium that separates the pure from the impure. Sumerian and Sanskrit are unrelated languages, so this is not a borrowing but a convergence — one idea arrived at twice, independently, in two of humanity’s oldest tongues, each describing fresh water as something that knows how to sort.
We tend to read that as metaphor. The people who wrote it did not. They were recording an observation — that water, given the right conditions, does work that looks like judgment. It carries the light away from the heavy, the clean away from the fouled, the fine away from the coarse. They rendered it in the language they had, the language of gods and first principles, because there was no other vocabulary yet for “the medium has properties, and the properties do the work.”
The Oldest Processing Protocol We Have
The Vedic texts describe the preparation of soma: a plant pressed, washed in cold water, drawn through a wool filter, refined in stages, and collected. Strip away the ritual and what remains is a process specification — cold water, mesh, staged separation. As far as the written record goes, it is the oldest trichome-processing protocol in human history, and it already holds the insight the modern industry forgot: the medium is intelligent, and the maker’s task is not to force an outcome but to calibrate the conditions that let the outcome occur. The soma-maker did not beat the plant into yielding. They arranged cold water and a filter so the plant gave up what it held, cleanly, on its own terms. The water did the work. The maker set the stage.
Two Ways to Meet the Natural World
The ancient world named the two postures directly. Enlil is the storm — wind, command, force; the Enlil posture compels, and when the result falls short its answer is always more of the same: more force, bigger instruments, heavier blows. Enki is the water — depth, wisdom, appropriate craft; the Enki posture enables, studying the properties of the medium and engineering the conditions under which the desired thing happens by itself. Not less effort — different effort, spent on understanding rather than on overpowering.
Modern solventless processing is, almost without exception, the Enlil posture wearing a lab coat: it arrests the plant in ice and batters it until the trichomes shake loose, then strains the wreckage through bags. When yields disappoint, the industry reaches for a bigger drum, more ice, a heavier motor — more force against the same unexamined architecture. Why This Is Not Nostalgia
It would be easy to mistake this for a romantic appeal to the past — the ancients knew best, so let us return. That is not the claim. The claim is narrower and harder: the ancients made an observation about physical law that happens to be correct — the same physics we reason from in First Principles — and the correctness is testable today, on real material, with documented results, not faith. Fresh, cold water genuinely has the properties the old names gave it. A fragile, oil-filled gland genuinely releases intact when the conditions are right and ruptures when they are not. Held the right way, the water does the separating, cleanly and on its own terms — not because it is forced to, but because that is what the medium does when it is allowed to. The Vedic and Sumerian traditions are not authorities to defer to; they are early, accurate field notes. The work now is to engineer the conditions they described with the precision the old protocol could only approximate.
That is the line the Abzu Refinery is built on. The name is not decoration — it is a statement of method: work with the medium, the way Enki does, and let water be the refiner it was always understood to be. The machine’s job is not to overpower the plant. It is to hold the conditions steady enough that the water can do what the soma-makers watched it do — separate the pure from the rest, cleanly, the same way every time.
The Point
Every industry eventually rediscovers a first principle it spent years overpowering. For two centuries the world kept food cold by cutting blocks of natural ice, hauling them, storing them, and watching them melt — an entire economy built on a consumable that begins to drift the moment you stop feeding it. Mechanical refrigeration did not make the ice trade more efficient; it made it unnecessary, by engineering the condition — controlled cold — instead of hauling the substance. The ice houses closed not because anyone harvested ice harder, but because someone finally asked what the cold was actually for.
Cannabis processing is at the same threshold, and the parallel is almost too neat: the legacy method still runs on hauled, melting ice — a consumable that, as The Hidden Cost of Ice sets out, carries its own contamination and cost into every run. The question is not “how do we wash harder?” It is the older, Enki question: what does the medium already know how to do, and what conditions let it do that? The answer was written down a long time ago, in two languages, under two names for the same water. We are only now building the machine that takes it literally.
